Drift along the legendary Perfume River aboard a traditional wooden dragon boat, gliding past willow-fringed banks to the iconic seven-storey Thien Mu Pagoda. This is Hue's single most atmospheric image, best savoured slowly from the water.
What to expect
You board a lacquered dragon boat at Toa Kham Wharf and glide upstream through the early morning mist or golden afternoon light, passing fishermen casting nets and stilted riverside houses unchanged for centuries. The boat docks at Thien Mu Pagoda, where you disembark to explore the oldest tower in Hue, the tranquil monastery gardens, and the famously preserved Austin car of the self-immolating monk Thich Quang Duc. The return journey downstream feels unhurried and meditative, with the Citadel walls reflected in the river. Complimentary Vietnamese tea and fruit are served on board.
Good to know
Boats depart from central Hue; combine with your Chan May private car transfer. Allow 2.5–3 hours on the water. Modest dress required at Thien Mu Pagoda (shoulders and knees covered). Pre-book to secure a private boat rather than a shared departure.
