Ascend the spiral staircase of Omaezaki's 19th-century lighthouse — one of Japan's original Western-style beacons — to a 360° panorama where the Pacific stretches to infinity and Fuji floats on the horizon. The dramatic cape walk below is equally unforgettable.
What to expect
The Omaezaki Lighthouse, built in 1874, is one of Japan's 16 'Registered Heritage Lighthouses' and sits on a dramatic volcanic headland where the Pacific and Enshunada seas converge. Your guide leads you up the original cast-iron spiral staircase to the lantern room, where the view on a clear day takes in the sweep of Suruga Bay and, to the north, the snow-capped cone of Fuji. Below, the cape's grassy bluffs are laced with walking paths past wildflowers and seabirds. The whole experience feels remote and exclusive, even though the port is just minutes away.
Good to know
The lighthouse is a 10-minute drive or a 30-minute scenic walk from the port. It opens at 9:00 AM. Wear comfortable shoes for the cape trail. Combine this with a fresh seafood lunch at the nearby Minato Park market for a perfect half-day.
