Paddle the wild volcanic coastline of Cape Omaezaki — one of Japan's most important loggerhead sea turtle nesting sites — with an expert naturalist guide who reads the water and the wildlife with equal skill. Japan's Pacific coast, without the crowds.
What to expect
Suited up and briefed at the water's edge, you'll launch your sea kayak into the clear Pacific swells of Suruga Bay and begin tracing the rugged volcanic sea cliffs of the Omaezaki cape. Your naturalist guide points out nesting beach sites used by loggerhead turtles — one of the densest nesting populations in the North Pacific — and, if the season is right, you may spot juveniles surfacing to breathe just metres from your kayak. The cliffs are alive with seabirds, the water is gin-clear over kelp beds, and the lighthouse watches over you from the headland above. A truly wild, meditative experience.
Good to know
Turtle sightings are most likely May–August (nesting season) and September (hatchlings). The tour requires moderate fitness — no kayaking experience needed, but participants should be comfortable on the water. Allow 3 hours including briefing and gear-up. Confirm all-aboard time with your guide before departure.
