Descend into a dramatic Pacific-facing sea cave to reach one of Japan's most extraordinary Shinto shrines. Udo Jingu is literally built inside a cliff grotto — ochre-red lacquer against dripping stalactites — and is considered a power spot for fertility, safe childbirth, and good fortune. An utterly bucket-list encounter with living Japanese spirituality in a breathtaking natural setting.
What to expect
Your private English-speaking guide collects you dockside and drives south along the stunning Nichinan Coast to Udo Jingu. You descend a dramatic clifftop staircase to the cave entrance, where the shrine's crimson halls emerge from the rock face above the crashing Pacific. Your guide explains the ritual of throwing 'undama' clay balls — balancing them on a rock for luck — and leads you through the proper Shinto approach before returning along the scenic Oni-no-Washboard coastline.
Good to know
Udo Jingu is approximately 40 minutes from Aburatsu Port. Pre-book your private guide well in advance (at least 2–4 weeks). The stairway descent involves around 200 steps — sturdy shoes are essential. Allows comfortable return to ship by all-aboard with a private driver.
