Step inside Japan's 'Little Kyoto of Kyushu' — the exquisitely preserved castle town of Obi, where samurai streets, moss-draped castle ruins and merchant quarters survive almost entirely intact. A living, breathing Edo-period townscape just an hour from the port, almost entirely undiscovered by international tourism.
What to expect
Explore the atmospheric ruins of Obi Castle and its sweeping grounds before threading through the preserved samurai and merchant quarters on foot with your guide. Visit the elegant Yoshokan samurai residence — still furnished as it was centuries ago — and pause at local crafts workshops. Your guide contextualises the Ito clan's rule and the town's remarkable survival through the Meiji era, making history viscerally real. The visit concludes with a tasting of Obi's signature flavours: thick sweet atsuyaki tamago and golden tempura.
