Walk the extraordinary 'Oni-no-Sentakuita' — the Devil's Washboard — a vast rippled plateau of ancient wave-cut rock encircling a palm-fringed island shrine. Aoshima Jinja rises from a jungle island accessible only by footbridge, a collision of tropical lushness and Shinto ceremony utterly unlike anywhere else in Japan.
What to expect
Your guide drives you north along the Nichinan Coast to Aoshima, timing the visit to catch the washboard rock formations at their most dramatic exposure. You cross the footbridge onto the island, circumnavigate it through tropical garden paths, and enter the ancient shrine precincts. Your guide explains the mythology of Yamasachi-hiko, the deity enshrined here, and points out the sacred 'meoto' rock pair in the inner garden. Afterwards, browse the charming beachside market stalls for Miyazaki mango confections.
Good to know
Aoshima is approximately 25 minutes from Aburatsu Port — the closest major attraction. Tidal exposure of the rock formations is best at low tide; a good guide will plan timing accordingly. Shrine grounds open daily. The island walk is flat and easy. Very manageable as part of a half-day excursion.
