Row a wooden boat beneath a shimmering curtain waterfall in the gorge where Japanese mythology was born. Takachiho is where the Sun Goddess Amaterasu is said to have hidden in a cave, plunging the world into darkness — the primordial story of Japan, told in a landscape of impossible beauty: hexagonal basalt columns, emerald water and mist.
What to expect
Your private driver-guide collects you at the port for the scenic two-hour inland drive through the Kyushu highlands to Takachiho. At the gorge, you board a flat-bottomed wooden rowboat and drift beneath the 17-metre Manai Falls as it spills directly into the jade-coloured river — one of the most iconic views in all of Japan. Afterwards, visit Takachiho Shrine, where ancient 'Yokagura' sacred dances were performed, and your guide illuminates the Kojiki creation myths that make every stone here resonate. Lunch at a local highland restaurant is included.
