Board a dedicated sightseeing vessel and navigate the 600-metre-wide Kanmon Strait — one of the world's busiest and most dramatic waterways — with the Kanmon Bridge arching overhead and the skylines of two islands on either beam. The most cinematic perspective in all of western Japan.
What to expect
The narrated cruise departs from the Shimonoseki waterfront and heads into the strait's famous tidal current — one of Japan's four great currents — which reverses direction four times a day with remarkable force. Your guide points out the precise spot of the 1185 Battle of Dan-no-Ura and the site where Miyamoto Musashi fought his legendary duel. The Kanmon Bridge, at 1,068 metres, frames every photograph dramatically. On the return, the Mojiko retro skyline and the Shimonoseki fortress coastline close together in a single, unforgettable panorama.
Good to know
Sightseeing boats depart regularly from near Karato Market on the Shimonoseki side; journey time is approximately 30–45 minutes for the loop. Book in advance for weekend departures. The tidal current is strongest at the equinoxes — spectacular timing if your cruise calls in spring or autumn. Allow 90 minutes total including transfer from pier.
