Climb to the 17th-century hilltop fortress that saved Trondheim from Swedish invasion, now perfectly preserved and commanding the finest panoramic views in the city. A private military historian guide unlocks the siege, the cannon batteries and the extraordinary wartime stories.
What to expect
The cobbled path up to Kristiansten rewards immediately: from the outer ramparts, the entire city unfolds below — the cathedral spire, the river delta, the fjord and, on clear days, the mountains beyond. Your guide positions you at each cannon tower to narrate the 1718 battle in forensic detail, then leads you inside the round tower keep, unchanged since the 1680s. The eastern bastion offers the single best photograph in Trondheim — city, fjord and fortress wall in one frame. Mornings are best; the light is extraordinary.
Good to know
A 25-minute walk from the cruise pier uphill through Bakklandet — the walk itself is scenic. Alternatively, taxi to the base (NOK 120, 8 minutes) and walk the final 10 minutes up. The fortress grounds are always open; interiors open May–September. Combine with a Bakklandet coffee stop on the way back down.
