Ride the legendary Flåmsbana railway, climbing 900 metres through cascading waterfalls and snow-dusted peaks in under an hour. Combine with a fjord cruise on the Nærøyfjord — a UNESCO double-header unlike anywhere else on Earth.
What to expect
The train departs Flåm station and immediately begins its breathtaking ascent through 20 tunnels, past sheer gorges and thundering waterfalls. A choreographed stop at Kjosfossen lets passengers step out onto the platform while mist from the falls drifts over them. Back in Flåm, board a silent-electric Nærøyfjord cruise through Europe's narrowest UNESCO-listed fjord — cliffs rise 1,400 m on both sides as eagles circle overhead. The round trip is perfectly engineered to leave you time for a meal in the village.
Good to know
Flåm is a dockside port (no tender). The railway is hugely popular June–August — book tickets online the moment your itinerary is confirmed. Allow minimum 5–6 hrs ashore for train + fjord cruise + lunch. Last trains back to Flåm align well with most all-aboard times; confirm yours specifically.
