Speed into the Arctic fjords aboard a powerful RIB (rigid inflatable boat) to seek humpback and sperm whales feeding in the nutrient-rich waters off Tromsø — one of the world's most accessible whale-watching destinations. Raw, close-up and breathtaking.
What to expect
Suited up in a full float suit and neoprene balaclava, you board a powerful RIB that thunders out of Tromsø harbour into the open fjord system. The skipper-guide — a trained marine naturalist — navigates to the feeding grounds, cutting the engine when a whale is sighted. The silence that follows a surfacing humpback, its vast back rolling and barnacled flukes lifting clear of the ink-black water, is one of the most breathtaking moments nature can offer. Encounters with pods of orca (killer whales) are also possible November through January. The speed, exposure and intimacy of the RIB make this far more visceral than a traditional whale-watch vessel.
Good to know
Peak season November–January for humpback and orca; some whale activity year-round. Duration 3–4 hours — check all-aboard carefully and allow buffer time. Full expedition suits provided. Not suitable for those with severe motion sickness. Pre-book directly; winter slots are in high demand.
