Speed through the Arctic archipelago on a private RIB past sea eagles and harbour porpoise by day, then — if season permits — transfer to a wilderness camp outside the city light-pollution zone for a personal Northern Lights chase with an astrophotographer guide.
What to expect
Suited in a full Arctic dry suit, your private RIB departs from Tromsø harbour and threads through the Kvaløya island archipelago — vast, wild, and barely touched by tourism. The guide spots white-tailed sea eagles on cliff roosts and, if lucky, pods of harbour porpoise at the bow wave. After a dockside Arctic meal of king crab or reindeer stew, the evening Northern Lights transfer begins: a convoy of two vehicles drives to the guide's pre-selected dark-sky location, where hot cloudberry juice is served while curtains of green aurora pulse overhead. Your astrophotographer guide positions your phone or camera for frame-perfect shots.
Good to know
Northern Lights are visible roughly Sept–March; midnight sun replaces them May–July. Confirm the ship's Tromsø overnight schedule — a Northern Lights chase requires darkness (after 22:00 in autumn). Pre-book at tromsoarcticexplorers.com; private packages require 14 days' notice. All thermal gear and suits provided.
