Cross to the island of Mousa by private ferry and step inside Mousa Broch — a 2,000-year-old Iron Age tower so perfectly intact you can climb its internal staircase to the open sky. Utterly unlike any ruin in Europe, this is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with prehistory.
What to expect
The 15-minute crossing from Leebitton deposits you on a wild, car-free island where the broch rises 13 metres from the machair. You can climb inside the double-walled tower via its original corbelled staircase to emerge at the top with panoramic views of the Shetland coastline. Grey seals haul out on the rocks below the broch walls, and the island is carpeted in wildflowers in summer. Tom Jamieson's family has run the crossing for generations and offers candid local commentary on the crossing.
Good to know
Leebitton pier is approximately 25 km south of Lerwick; arrange a taxi or hire car in advance. Crossings run weather-permitting — check the latest schedule and pre-book online as capacity is very limited. Allow 2.5–3 hours on the island; confirm your return crossing time before disembarking. Check all-aboard time carefully and build in a generous buffer for the drive back.
