Journey the length of Shetland's South Mainland in a private vehicle with a certified local naturalist-guide: Shetland ponies on open moorland, puffins at Sumburgh Head RSPB reserve, and the extraordinary layered archaeology of Jarlshof — Bronze Age, Iron Age, Norse, and medieval all in one site.
What to expect
Your guide collects you dockside in Lerwick and heads south through rolling moorland to Jarlshof, where 4,000 years of successive settlements are exposed in a single breathtaking trench — a UNESCO-recognised archaeological wonder. Next, Sumburgh Head RSPB reserve delivers puffins at close range from cliff-top viewing points, along with gannets, razorbills, and Arctic terns. En route, you'll stop wherever native Shetland ponies graze roadside — compact, shaggy, and utterly photogenic. The return takes in St Ninian's Isle's tombolo, one of the finest beaches in Scotland.
Good to know
Book as early as possible — private places fill quickly when multiple ships are in port. The full tour runs approximately 6–7 hours, comfortably returning before most all-aboard times. Puffins are present May through mid-August; confirm the season with the operator before booking.
