Board a small rigid inflatable boat and hug the dramatic sandstone cliffs of Bressay and Noss, home to one of Britain's largest gannet colonies and a roaring wall of 180,000 nesting seabirds. This is Shetland from the sea — raw, loud, and utterly spectacular.
What to expect
Departing from Lerwick's Small Boat Harbour — within easy walking distance of the pier — the boat crosses to Bressay's eastern face before rounding into the National Nature Reserve of Noss. The cliffs here rise over 180 metres and are stacked ledge-upon-ledge with nesting seabirds; the noise and smell are as impressive as the sight. Grey and common seals bob inquisitively alongside. The skipper positions the boat for exceptional photography from every angle, and puffins are often seen bobbing on the water at close range.
