Peel back the extraordinary, slightly surreal history of Whittier — a former top-secret WWII and Cold War military port where nearly the entire population still lives in a single building. An offbeat, utterly unique slice of American history hiding in plain sight.
What to expect
Your guide meets you dockside and immediately begins unpacking the layers of Whittier's bizarre, fascinating past — from its construction as a secret WWII supply port to its Cold War heyday when it housed thousands of soldiers and their families in total isolation. The walk passes the haunting hulk of the Buckner Building, once dubbed 'the city under one roof,' before moving to the still-inhabited Begich Towers where most of Whittier's residents live, work, go to school, and shop without ever needing to go outside. The Whittier Museum adds personal artefacts and photographs that bring the story to life. The scale of the Cold War infrastructure, slowly being reclaimed by the Alaskan forest, is unexpectedly moving.
Good to know
This tour runs 1.5–2 hours and is easily completed before all-aboard — ideal as a complement to a morning on the water. Wear waterproof shoes; Whittier receives significant rainfall. The Buckner Building exterior can be viewed but the interior is not publicly accessible for safety reasons.
