Cross into the living territory of the Innu Nation at Ekuanitshit — the Indigenous community of Mingan — for an intimate, guide-led encounter with one of Canada's oldest continuous cultures, their relationship to this land, and their magnificent artistic traditions.
What to expect
The Innu community of Ekuanitshit sits just 10 minutes by road from Havre-Saint-Pierre, on land their people have inhabited for thousands of years. Community guides lead visitors through the cultural centre, explain traditional hunting and fishing practices, and introduce the vibrant visual art and beadwork for which this community is celebrated across Quebec. Conversations are unhurried and personal — elders sometimes join to share oral histories of the Gulf coast and the archipelago the Innu call home. The experience closes with a tasting of traditional foods including bannock and smoked fish.
Good to know
Arrange in advance through the council's cultural office — walk-in capacity is limited out of respect for the community. A short taxi or rental car ride from the pier (approx. 10 min). Dress modestly and follow all community guidelines on photography.
