Trek to the dramatic ruins of Aggstein Castle, clinging to a sheer rocky crag 300 metres above the Danube gorge. The views from this medieval robber-baron stronghold are among the most arresting in all of Austria — and barely touched by tourism.
What to expect
A scenic drive or taxi from the river brings you to the base of the castle path; the steep but manageable 20-minute climb through forest delivers you onto the castle ramparts with vertigo-inducing views over the river gorge. Atmospheric towers, Gothic archways, and a terrace café let you savour the drama at leisure. Local legend tells of the notorious robber-baron Jörg Scheck von Wald who imprisoned travellers here — history with genuine menace.
Good to know
Located between Melk and Krems, approximately 8 km from Spitz; a private taxi from the port is the most practical option. Wear sturdy shoes for the rocky approach path. Allow 2–2.5 hours total. The castle is far less visited than Melk or Dürnstein — arrive early for the most atmospheric experience.
