Hike into Múlagljúfur — a breathtaking, off-the-beaten-path canyon draped in thundering waterfalls, lush moss, and towering basalt walls. Iceland's best-kept secret, just an hour from Djúpivogur.
What to expect
A private guide drives you to the Múlagljúfur trailhead, situated in the shadow of Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. The hike (roughly 45 minutes each way, rated easy-moderate) winds alongside a rushing glacial river into a narrow, moss-lined canyon. Two spectacular waterfalls — Hangandifoss and Magunsfoss — cascade down sheer basalt cliffs into emerald pools far below. The canyon walls close in, amplifying the roar of the water into something almost cathedral-like. Very few visitors make it here; your group is likely to have it almost entirely to yourselves.
Good to know
Trail is approx. 5 km return; allow 2.5–3 hours including stops. Waterproof hiking boots essential — the path crosses boggy ground. Best combined with Jökulsárlón on a private full-day itinerary. Confirm fitness requirements and footwear with your guide at booking.
