Stand on the still-warm summit of Eldfell, the volcano that erupted without warning in 1973, then descend into Eldheimar — the world's only museum built over a home swallowed by lava. Raw, moving, and utterly unforgettable.
What to expect
The hike to Eldfell's 226 m summit is steep but short, rewarding you with panoramic views across the archipelago and the sensation of heat rising through the volcanic soil beneath your boots. The crater rim offers a silence that feels almost sacred. At Eldheimar, multi-layered exhibitions recount how 5,300 islanders were evacuated in a single night in January 1973; the centrepiece is an actual lava-engulfed house, glass walls revealing rooms frozen in time. Allow at least 90 minutes for the museum alone.
Good to know
Eldheimar is a 10-minute walk from the pier. Wear sturdy footwear for the Eldfell trail — the volcanic scree is loose. The museum gift shop is excellent for high-quality Icelandic design souvenirs. Combined, plan for half a day. Check opening hours at eldheimar.is before your visit.
