Discover Qaqortoq — Greenland's most beautiful town — on an expert-guided art and history walk linking the celebrated 'Stone & Man' open-air sculpture trail with the Norse ruins of the Eastern Settlement, where Erik the Red's colony thrived 1,000 years ago.
What to expect
Begin at Qaqortoq's colourful harbour, where 24 Scandinavian and Greenlandic artists have carved directly into the town's glacially smoothed boulders, creating one of the Arctic's most unexpected open-air galleries. Your guide weaves between carvings with stories of each artist's vision and the Inuit and Norse legends they reference. The route culminates at the Norse farmstead ruins, where you stand in the footprint of a civilisation that vanished seven centuries ago. Finish with Greenlandic coffee at a waterfront café.
Good to know
Qaqortoq is approximately 60 km east of Prins Christian Sund and typically accessed by tender. The walking trail is on uneven terrain; good shoes are recommended. The town's bakery and market are excellent for local produce — budget extra time. Book at least one week in advance during peak season (July–August).
