Greece's oldest winery — founded in 1861 by Bavarian merchant Gustav Clauss — crowns a pine-forested hillside just 8 km from Patras port. A private guided tour through gothic barrel halls and royal reception rooms culminates in an exclusive tasting of their legendary Mavrodaphne.
What to expect
A short taxi or private transfer from the port delivers you to a neo-Gothic estate that feels more Rhineland than Greek. Your private guide leads you through fragrant barrel aging halls, past enormous 19th-century casks, and into the royal guest villa. The tasting pairs Mavrodaphne (an opulent fortified red) and Demestica whites with local mezze. The panoramic terrace view over the Gulf of Patras is the perfect finale.
Good to know
Only 8 km from port — 15 min by taxi (approx. EUR 12 each way). Open daily; pre-arrange private group tasting directly with the winery via their website. Allows a leisurely half-day, easily combined with Patras castle or the Cathedral of St Andrew. Easy to be back well before all-aboard.
