Molli Narrow-Gauge Steam Train: Bad Doberan to Kühlungsborn

Board the legendary 'Molli' — a Victorian narrow-gauge steam railway that puffs through the streets of Bad Doberan and along the Baltic coast to the elegant seaside resort of Kühlungsborn — one of Europe's most charming heritage rail journeys.

What to expect

The 'Molli' has run since 1886, and its steam engines still whistle and clatter through the cobbled streets of Bad Doberan — a UNESCO-recognised Cistercian minster town — before the track opens to sweeping Baltic Sea views en route to Kühlungsborn. The seaside resort at journey's end has an elegant Wilhelmine promenade, fine seafood restaurants, and a beautiful beach for a post-ride stroll. The full return journey takes around 1.5 hours, leaving time to explore both Bad Doberan's magnificent Gothic minster and Kühlungsborn's beachfront.

Good to know

Bad Doberan is approximately 45 minutes by road from Wismar — pre-book a private taxi or hire car for the transfer. The Molli runs year-round; no advance booking required for the train itself, but check timetables at molli-bahn.de. A full out-and-back day including transfer is achievable within a typical Wismar port call — confirm your all-aboard time and plan accordingly.
