Enter the perfectly preserved home and studio of Anna and Michael Ancher, Denmark's most iconic artistic couple, left almost exactly as it was in their Golden Age heyday. An intimate, deeply moving cultural pilgrimage.
What to expect
The butter-yellow house on Markvej is a time capsule: Anna Ancher's studio still holds her easel and pigments; the parlour retains the hand-painted furniture and bohemian clutter of a 19th-century artistic salon. The Anchers were at the heart of the Skagen artist colony that drew painters from across Scandinavia and beyond, and the house breathes that creative energy still. Guided audio tours are excellent, and the garden — where the couple entertained Krøyer, Johansen, and Tuxen — is a lovely place to linger. The combination ticket with Skagens Museum a short walk away makes for a complete, deeply satisfying cultural half-day.
Good to know
A 15-minute walk or short taxi from the port. Open May–October; check seasonal hours on the museum website. The house is small — arrive early or late in the port day to avoid any overlap with other visitors. Pre-book combined tickets online.
