Visit the hauntingly beautiful 'Buried Church' — a 14th-century tower rising from the dunes, all that remains of a church swallowed by encroaching sand over centuries. One of Denmark's most surreal and evocative landmarks.
What to expect
The lone white tower emerges from rolling dunes like something from a dream — or a cautionary tale. In the 18th century, sand began invading the church so relentlessly that worshippers had to dig their way in; today only the tower survives, and climbing it delivers a sweeping view over dune and sea. The interior displays artefacts from the buried nave and tells the remarkable story of a community's centuries-long battle against the advancing desert. The surrounding dune landscape is hauntingly quiet and photogenic, particularly in the low golden light of a Danish summer afternoon.
Good to know
Located about 2 km south of central Skagen — a pleasant 25-minute walk through dune paths, or a short taxi ride. Open daily May–September; the tower climb involves a narrow staircase. Combine naturally with a Råbjerg Mile excursion as both lie south of town.
