Be welcomed into an authentic Tongan village on Lifuka for a private cultural immersion: watch the earth oven (umu) prepared, join in tapa cloth beating, witness a kava ceremony, and then feast on the results. This is Polynesia's living culture, not a performance — and Ha'apai is where it remains utterly genuine.
What to expect
The morning begins at the village with a welcome of woven pandanus mats and fragrant garlands. Elders demonstrate the ancient art of tapa cloth making from mulberry bark while you try your hand with the beater. The kava ceremony follows — earthy, ceremonial, and quietly moving. At midday the umu is opened to reveal pork, yam, taro, and lu sipi (lamb in coconut cream), served on banana leaves in the traditional way. A farewell song sees you off.
Good to know
Dress modestly (knees and shoulders covered) as a mark of respect; a light wrap is ideal. Allow 4–5 hours. The lodge coordinates transfers from the wharf. Pre-book via email; confirm numbers at least two weeks before your cruise call.
