Sail a traditional vaka (Tongan outrigger canoe) to Ha'apai's most spectacular coral gardens, then snorkel over an explosively colourful reef alive with parrotfish, rays, and sea turtles. Combining living maritime heritage with world-class snorkelling, this is a quintessentially Tongan hour on the water.
What to expect
The vaka departs from the Ha'apai wharf with the sail filling on a warm trade wind. Your skipper, a third-generation fisherman, reads the reef from the bow and anchors directly above the garden's finest corals. Mask and fins on, you drop into water so clear it seems to magnify the reef below. Brain corals, fan corals, and enormous clams surround shoals of surgeonfish and the occasional white-tip reef shark. Back aboard, cold watermelon and fresh coconut await as you sail back to port.
Good to know
Non-swimmers can participate — the outrigger sail alone is a joy, and snorkel areas are shallow (2–5 m). Quality mask and snorkel are provided; bring your own if you prefer a prescription mask. Allow 3–4 hours. Book via the lodge's direct email and confirm the tender pier meeting point.
