Slip into the protected shallows of the Ulunikoro Marine Conservation Area — a community-managed reef sanctuary rated Kadavu's top natural attraction. Expert local guides reveal coral gardens and pelagic life invisible to the untrained eye.
What to expect
A traditionally carved wooden boat whisks you to the conservation zone at first light, when visibility tops 30 metres and fish activity peaks. Your Fijian guide — a village conservation warden — narrates the reef's ecology in English while pointing out giant clams, sea turtles, lionfish, and schools of barracuda. The pace is leisurely and completely unhurried, with two distinct snorkel sites covered. The journey back includes a chilled coconut and a stop at a local village for a brief, respectful welcome.
Good to know
The conservation area charges a community levy (included in the operator price). Snorkel gear, reef-safe sunscreen, and a light lunch are provided. The activity finishes 90 minutes before typical all-aboard times. Water shoes are recommended.
