Sit alongside Lauan master weavers and carvers in Fulaga village to learn the centuries-old techniques behind Fiji's finest tapa cloth, pandanus mats, and hand-carved wooden artifacts — traditions the Lau Group is renowned for across the entire Pacific.
What to expect
Seated on woven mats inside a family bure, you're introduced to the matriarch of a weaving family whose craft has been passed through six generations. She guides your hands through the soaking, beating, and patterning of tapa (masi) bark cloth while explaining the symbolic meaning of the geometric motifs. Across the compound, the village carver demonstrates adze and chisel techniques on a vesi-wood bowl, inviting you to try. Finished pieces — your own and those for sale — carry a provenance and story that no market purchase can match.
Good to know
Numbers strictly limited to 4–6 guests to preserve the intimacy. Pre-purchase of a finished artifact directly supports the artisan family — bring USD cash (small denominations). The workshop combines beautifully with the kava ceremony excursion as a full cultural morning. Allow 2.5 hours including a village walk.
