Join a marine biologist at dawn on Gerakas — the finest sea-turtle nesting beach in the Mediterranean — for a guided walk along the nesting trenches, learning the science of loggerhead conservation before the beach opens to the public. An intimate, expert-led encounter unavailable to the general tourist.
What to expect
A pre-dawn taxi delivers you to the protected southeastern tip of the island as the sun rises over the Peloponnese. An ARCHELON biologist meets you at the beach perimeter and walks you along the taped-off nesting corridors, pointing out fresh excavations, counting emerging hatchling tracks, and explaining the satellite-tagging programme. You'll see the beach in its most primordial state — wide, windswept, and hauntingly empty. As the morning warms, the researcher takes questions over coffee at the small field station before you depart ahead of the public access hours. It is, without question, the most meaningful wildlife hour Zakynthos offers.
Good to know
Gerakas is 30 km from the port — pre-arrange a private taxi and allow 40 minutes each way. The visit must be arranged directly with ARCHELON in advance; contact them via archelon.gr. Beach access for the public is restricted after 7 a.m. in nesting season (May–October), so this is strictly an early-morning experience — plan around a late-morning all-aboard.
