Venture into the fierce, otherworldly Mani — Greece's most remote and untamed peninsula — in a private 4x4 with a local cultural guide. Fortified tower villages, 12th-century frescoed chapels, and cliffs plunging into cobalt sea define this UNESCO-recognised cultural landscape.
What to expect
You are collected from the port in a private air-conditioned 4x4 and driven south into the dramatic Mani, where the landscape transforms into a moonscape of dry stone and prickly pear. In Vathia, an abandoned tower village perched on a rocky promontory, you explore labyrinthine alleys alone. A 12th-century chapel reveals extraordinary Byzantine frescoes your guide interprets with authority. Lunch is a slow, generous affair at a cliff-edge family taverna — grilled octopus, local olive oil, Laconian honey. The return route hugs spectacular sea cliffs at golden hour.
