Descend into a real, raw Arctic coal mine that last operated in the 1990s, guided by a miner-turned-storyteller through tunnels of exposed permafrost and frozen history. One of Svalbard's most distinctive underground experiences.
What to expect
Don a hard hat, headlamp and warm overalls before following your guide into Mine 3 on the hillside above Longyearbyen. Inside, the temperature hovers just below freezing year-round, and the permafrost walls glisten under lantern light. Your guide — part historian, part former miner — tells the story of the Norwegian coal industry that literally built this Arctic town, from polar night working conditions to the geopolitics of the Svalbard Treaty. Emerge into the sharp Arctic air with a completely different understanding of Longyearbyen.
