Explore one of the world's great gardens — a lush, sub-tropical oasis of Himalayan rhododendrons, Chilean fire trees, and New Zealand tree ferns on the shore of Loch Ewe, at the same latitude as Moscow. An otherworldly masterpiece created from bare Highland rock.
What to expect
The garden occupies a sheltered peninsula on the shores of Loch Ewe, warmed by the Gulf Stream against all Highland logic. Osgood Mackenzie began creating it from bare rock and moorland in 1862; today its woodland walks reveal Giant Himalayan lilies, tree ferns from the southern hemisphere, and rare rhododendrons ablaze with colour from April through June. The lochside setting frames every vista with water and mountain, and the restored 19th-century walled kitchen garden is a horticultural gem. An NTS garden guide can be arranged to walk with small groups for deeper botanical insight.
