Board the legendary 1912 wooden-carriaged train from Palma to the mountain village of Sóller, rattling through the Serra de Tramuntana's orange groves and dramatic tunnels — then ride the vintage tram down to the azure port for lunch. One of Europe's great heritage rail journeys.
What to expect
The train departs from Palma's Plaça d'Espanya, a grand Modernista station that is itself worth admiring. The 27-km journey climbs through citrus orchards, tunnels blasted through limestone mountains, and emerald valleys before descending into Sóller's charming Plaça de la Constitució. From the village square, the vintage orange tram trundles 5 km down to Port de Sóller — a perfect crescent bay lined with terrace restaurants. Enjoy fresh ensaïmada pastry and café amb llet before the return journey.
Good to know
Trains depart Palma at 10:10, 10:50, and 12:15; the round trip takes approximately 3.5 hours including tram. Book return tickets online well in advance — the tourist train sells out weeks ahead in summer. The station is a 10-minute taxi from the cruise terminal. Allow buffer time: the last convenient return reaches Palma by mid-afternoon, well before all-aboard.
