Perched on a sheer 160-ft sea stack above the North Sea, Dunnottar is one of the most dramatic castle ruins on earth — the real hiding place of the Scottish Crown Jewels. Pair it with the charming harbour town of Stonehaven for a quintessential Aberdeenshire morning that belongs on every bucket list.
What to expect
The 25-minute drive south from Aberdeen delivers you to a castle so cinematic it inspired the animated film Brave. A steep coastal path descends to the gatehouse, and from there you roam the sprawling ruins: the Watchtower, the drawing room where Mary Queen of Scots once slept, and the eerily intact chapel. Afterwards, wander Stonehaven's stone harbour, pick up a world-famous Stonehaven deep-fried Mars bar, and browse the independent boutiques at leisure.
Good to know
Castle open year-round, but the coastal path can be slippery in wet weather — wear sturdy shoes. Dunnottar is 15 miles south of Aberdeen; allow 3–4 hours total. Taxis or private transfers are the smoothest option. Book entry tickets online to save queuing at the gate.
