Scenic Wachau Danube cruise (Krems–Dürnstein–Melk)

The Wachau is one of Europe's most beautiful river stretches and is built to be seen from the water — gliding past terraced vineyards, the ruined hilltop castles of Aggstein and Schönbühel, the blue tower of Dürnstein, and the Göttweig and Melk abbeys on their bluffs. Up to four sailings a day leave Krems; a one-way to Dürnstein plus a vineyard walk back is the ideal independent half-day. An abbey ticket earns a 20% DDSG discount.

What to expect

You'll board a DDSG Blue Danube ferry at Krems and settle in as the boat glides downstream through the Wachau's terraced vineyards, passing the dramatic silhouettes of ruined castles perched on cliffsides—Aggstein and Schönbühel—before Dürnstein's iconic blue tower comes into view. After disembarking at Dürnstein, you'll walk back upriver through the vineyards on foot, trading river views for hillside perspectives as you make your way gradually back to Krems. The rhythm is leisurely: roughly 40 minutes by water, then a paced vineyard walk of 1–2 hours depending on your pace, giving you time to absorb one of Europe's most storied stretches of river valley.

Beats the ship · vs the cruise line

Here the ship wins. If you're on a river cruise this exact scenic stretch is already included free as your sailing leg — you do not need to buy the DDSG boat. Only pay the $25-$53 if your ship is docked at Krems and you specifically want a standalone Dürnstein-and-walk-back loop.

Good to know

Up to four sailings depart Krems daily; plan for a half-day excursion (2.5–3 hours total) within a typical 6–8 hour port window, leaving comfortable buffer time to return before all-aboard. The one-way Krems–Dürnstein fare is approximately €23 (~$25), making this an economical option if your ship is docked at Krems rather than continuing upriver to Melk. Book your vineyard walk in advance if joining a guided version, and note that an abbey ticket qualifies you for a 20% DDSG discount on fares. Wear sturdy walking shoes for the return vineyard path and bring sun protection, as the hillside trek offers little shade.
