Witness the iconic stilt fishermen of Koggala — one of Sri Lanka's most photographed and rarest living traditions — then visit a working sea turtle hatchery where you may release a hatchling into the Indian Ocean. A morning of pure, unscripted wonder.
What to expect
Your guide collects you from Galle port for the short coastal drive east to Koggala lagoon, arriving as the rising sun silhouettes the stilts against the sea — a photograph you will never delete. Your guide explains the generations-old technique and introduces you to the fishermen personally. The adjacent sea turtle hatchery is a government-partnered conservation project where staff walk you through the incubation process; if hatchlings are ready, you'll carry one to the water's edge and release it. The return journey passes a working cinnamon plantation and a colonial-era tea bungalow for a mid-morning refreshment stop.
Good to know
Stilt fishermen are most active at dawn and late afternoon — confirm your guide will target the early session. The full excursion runs approximately 4 hours. Turtle hatchling releases cannot be guaranteed (nature's schedule), but the hatchery visit is always worthwhile. Light beach footwear recommended.
