Walk a primeval forest gorge where a dozen waterfalls cascade into a crystalline river, then emerge at the caldera of Lake Towada — Japan's most celebrated twin-crater lake. One of Tohoku's supreme natural wonders, best savoured slowly with a private guide.
What to expect
A private vehicle whisks you from Aomori port into Towada-Hachimantai National Park, a 90-minute scenic drive through apple orchards and beech forest. You walk the 14km riverside trail at leisure, with your guide identifying endemic flora and the ancient beech canopy. Lunch is arranged at a riverside kaiseki restaurant. The afternoon is spent at Lake Towada's indigo waters before a relaxed return to port.
Good to know
Aomori is the nearest port for this excursion. Confirm all-aboard time and allow a 90-min buffer for the return drive. Pre-book the private vehicle well in advance, especially for autumn foliage season (mid-Oct). Wear comfortable walking shoes; the gorge path is well-maintained gravel.
