Encounter the towering illuminated floats of the Nebuta Festival — UNESCO-recognised and Japan's most electrifying summer spectacle — displayed year-round in a waterfront museum of extraordinary drama. Then feast on Aomori's world-class seafood at the bay market.
What to expect
The waterfront Wa·Rasse museum houses five colossal Nebuta floats — multi-storey papier-mâché warriors and deities glowing with 3,000 hand-painted lanterns. Your private guide explains the centuries-old festival traditions and introduces you to a Nebuta artisan who demonstrates the intricate construction. Afterward, the adjacent Aomori Gyosai Center offers the prefecture's legendary hotate (scallops), tuna, and sea urchin — your guide advises on the finest vendors for a private tasting.
Good to know
Museum is a 5-minute walk from Aomori port — extremely convenient for tight schedules. Open daily 09:00–18:00 (May–Aug until 19:00). Book a private guide add-on in advance for the food market segment. The museum alone works well even with only 2 hours ashore.
