Join a marine-biologist-guided small-group vessel out of Seward to encounter humpback whales, orcas, and Dall's porpoise in the rich upwelling waters of Resurrection Bay and the outer Kenai Fjords. Intimate group sizes mean every sighting is a front-row experience.
What to expect
Leaving Seward's small-boat harbor, you enter Resurrection Bay's glacially cold, plankton-rich waters where humpbacks feed on herring balls near the surface. Breaches, bubble-net feeding, and tail-lob sequences are common in peak season (June–September). Steller sea lions and horned puffins accompany the boat through the outer islands. The naturalist provides real-time identification and behavioral commentary throughout the two-hour encounter.
Good to know
Half-day tours (4 hrs) work well as a second excursion alongside a glacier cruise. Book the earliest morning departure for calmer seas and better whale activity. Bring seasickness preventatives if sensitive; layered waterproof clothing essential. Sells out weeks in advance in July.
