Board a private charter vessel out of Rausu on the Shiretoko coast for an intimate encounter with Steller's sea eagles in winter and sperm whales in summer — two of the most coveted wildlife spectacles in the entire North Pacific.
What to expect
In winter, the sea around Rausu fills with drift ice and the world's densest concentration of Steller's sea eagles — magnificent birds with near-2.5-metre wingspans that dive repeatedly within metres of the boat. In summer, sperm whale sightings are near-daily, with orcas and Dall's porpoises also frequent companions. The Shiretoko Peninsula's volcanic ridgeline forms a dramatic backdrop as the vessel drifts quietly, engines off, in the presence of these giants. Your captain speaks the ocean's language with effortless authority.
Good to know
Rausu is on the Okhotsk (east) side of Shiretoko — roughly 2 hours from Utoro. Book the private charter directly via the operator website well ahead of season. Winter (Feb–Mar) for eagles; June–September for whales. Layered technical clothing and hand warmers are essential in winter.
