Water-taxi across Kachemak Bay then hike to the ice-blue terminus of Grewingk Glacier — an other-worldly wilderness lake rimmed with calving ice, accessible only by boat and boot.
What to expect
The 15-minute skiff crossing from Homer Spit is a scenic warm-up, with sea otters and puffins often in view. A moderate 3-mile trail winds through spruce forest before opening dramatically onto the glacial outwash plain. The lake glows turquoise beneath Grewingk's face; icebergs drift silently through the shallows. Return at your chosen tide window for the crossing back.
Good to know
Allow 5–6 hours total. Coordinate your return water-taxi pick-up time with the operator and factor in a 30-minute buffer before all-aboard. Waterproof hiking boots and trekking poles strongly recommended. Book the water taxi the morning of or in advance via their website.
