Board a naturalist-led small vessel for a scenic wildlife cruise through Kachemak Bay, circling the legendary Gull Island seabird rookery and scanning the bay's rich waters for otters, porpoises, and orcas.
What to expect
Departing Homer Spit, the vessel glides past the Spit's harbor seals before heading for Gull Island, where the noise, colour, and spectacle of tens of thousands of nesting seabirds is genuinely overwhelming in the best possible way. Binoculars are provided. The captain then navigates deeper into the bay seeking sea otters floating in kelp rafts and, in season, humpback whales feeding on herring balls. The return pass along the Kenai Mountains' glaciated face is breathtaking.
Good to know
Tours run 4–5 hours and depart from Homer Spit — a short cab or water-shuttle ride from the cruise dock. Dress in waterproof outer layers regardless of forecast; bay conditions change rapidly. Binoculars are provided but bring your own for the best views. Book directly with Rainbow Tours as spots fill quickly in summer.
