Hike through ancient rainforest to the thundering face of Mendenhall Glacier and venture inside its luminous blue ice caves — a window into 3,000 years of geological time. One of Alaska's most visually spectacular and emotionally arresting natural experiences.
What to expect
Your expert glacier guide leads you through the old-growth Tongass National Forest, past rushing waterfalls and moraine fields, to the living face of Mendenhall Glacier. Step inside the cathedral-like blue ice caves carved by meltwater — the cerulean light filtering through ancient ice is otherworldly. Learn the glacier's story from a specialist naturalist: its history, its recession, and what it reveals about climate. The round-trip trek covers approximately 4 miles of scenic wilderness trail.
Good to know
Wear sturdy hiking boots and waterproof layers; microspikes are provided for ice sections. Duration is approximately 4–5 hours including transport from the Juneau pier. Book the guided backcountry version rather than the self-guided visitor center visit to access the ice cave areas. Moderate fitness level required.
