Trek between nine ancient Hindu temples scattered across the volcanic slopes of Mount Ungaran — steaming geothermal vents, mountain panoramas and thousand-year-old stone shrines make this Java's most atmospheric secret.
What to expect
The drive from Semarang into the Ungaran highlands takes just over an hour, climbing through tea plantations and cool mountain air. At Gedong Songo ('Nine Buildings' in Javanese) you follow a scenic trekking path that links the temple clusters across the hillside, with Mount Ungaran looming above and a bubbling sulphur spring steaming dramatically beside one of the shrines. Your private guide explains the Shaivite iconography carved into each cella while you take in views stretching across Central Java. Horses are available for those who prefer to ride between temples. The site is rarely crowded, giving it a genuinely sacred, exploratory atmosphere.
Good to know
Comfortable walking shoes and a light layer are essential — it is noticeably cooler at altitude. Entry fee: approx. IDR 10,000–15,000 per person. Allow 5–6 hours round-trip from the port. A good option to pair with a brief Semarang city stop on the return leg.
