Cross the fjord by ferry to Norway's oldest stave church — a UNESCO World Heritage Site built around 1130 AD — and explore its extraordinary Viking wood-carvings with an expert local guide. One of the most important medieval buildings in Northern Europe.
What to expect
The ferry deposits you in a hamlet of painted wooden houses below the church hill. You climb a short path through wildflowers to a structure that has stood for nearly 900 years, its dark timber alive with interlacing dragon and serpent carvings that predate Christianity. Inside, a knowledgeable guide traces the Viking 'Urnes style' that gave its name to an entire artistic movement. The altar pieces, roof timbers and carved portals are hauntingly beautiful. The fjord panorama from the churchyard is among the finest in Norway.
