Climb into the dramatic limestone karsts just south of Da Nang to discover ancient Buddhist and Hindu sanctuaries tucked inside cathedral-like caves — then ascend to panoramic viewpoints over the city, the sea and the Cham Pa pass. Surreal, sacred and surprisingly strenuous.
What to expect
Five marble-and-limestone peaks (the 'Five Elements') rise dramatically from a coastal plain, and Water Mountain (Thuy Son) is the crown jewel. Stone staircases wind up through banyan-shaded courtyards to pagodas and then plunge into vast caverns where shafts of light pierce cathedral ceilings above golden Buddhas. The Am Phu cave's dramatic sculptural tableaux of heaven and hell are extraordinary. From the summit, the entire Da Nang coastline — including China Beach — unfurls in a single sweeping view.
Good to know
Only 9 km (~20 min) from Tien Sa Port — ideal as a half-day excursion or a first stop on a longer day. There are 156 steps to the main entrance (elevator also available, VND 15,000 extra). Wear closed-toe shoes; caves are uneven. Can be combined with a Hoi An afternoon visit for a full-day luxury itinerary.
