Explore one of Ireland's greatest privately-owned estates — Curraghmore, home of the Marquess of Waterford — with access to its magnificent formal gardens, ancient woodlands, and a remarkable shell house built by Lady Catherine Power in the 1750s.
What to expect
Drive through parkland that has barely changed in centuries to reach the magnificent forecourt of Curraghmore House, set against the River Clodiagh. Wander formal gardens framed by centuries-old yew hedges and herbaceous borders, then descend into the woods to discover the shell house — a baroque fantasy of seashells, mirrors, and stone, entirely encrusted by hand by Lady Catherine herself. The estate's scale and silence feel genuinely removed from the modern world. Wildlife — red squirrels, herons, and otters — frequent the riverside walks.
Good to know
Curraghmore is approximately 20km west of Waterford city — hire a private car or taxi for the round trip (approx. 25 minutes each way). Check the estate's seasonal opening days at curraghmoreehouse.ie before your port call, as it is not open every day. Allow 2–2.5 hours on the estate. Book a private car to control your return time relative to all-aboard.
