Climb to the lantern room of Hook Lighthouse — over 800 years old and the oldest operational lighthouse in the world — for panoramic views of the Celtic Sea and a guided tour through its medieval tower. An utterly singular piece of maritime history.
What to expect
Expert guides lead you up the spiral staircase through the lighthouse's 13th-century Norman tower — each floor revealing original medieval stonework, keeper's quarters, and the mechanics of the light itself. At the lantern room, the panorama sweeps across the estuary to the Saltee Islands and the open Atlantic. The surrounding headland is a dramatic landscape of wave-sculpted rock, tidal pools, and seabirds. The visitor centre below explores the lighthouse's incredible 800-year story of wrecks, rescues, and keeper families.
Good to know
Hook Head is approximately 55km from Waterford city — allow 50 minutes by private car or taxi each way. Pre-book guided tour slots at hookheritage.ie, particularly in summer. Allow 1.5 hours at the lighthouse itself. A private car hire is strongly recommended to control timing against your all-aboard. Combine with a stop at Duncannon Fort en route if time allows.
