Stroll the grand Art Deco promenade of Dunkirk's elegant seaside quarter, then enter the LAAC — a world-class contemporary art museum set in a sinuous 1970s building — for a private curator-led discovery of its remarkable permanent collection.
What to expect
The morning begins with a stroll along the Malo-les-Bains promenade, where grand Belle Époque villas and a sweeping sandy beach create an unexpectedly glamorous backdrop. Your private curator then guides you into the LAAC, whose organic concrete architecture — designed by Jean Willerval — is itself a work of art. Inside, a world-class permanent collection of post-war and contemporary art is displayed in light-filled, intimate galleries without the crowds of Paris. Highlights include monumental sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle in the sculpture garden and rare pieces by Karel Appel and Asger Jorn. The combination of sea air, Art Deco grandeur, and serious modern art is uniquely Dunkirquois.
Good to know
The LAAC is a 20-minute walk or 10-minute taxi from the cruise terminal. Open Wednesday–Monday; closed Tuesday. Pre-book the private curator visit at least one week ahead via the museum's official website. Allow 3 hours total for the promenade walk and the museum visit.
